Sita
Earlier this month, Nina Paley, creator of Sita Sings the Blues, gave a lecture that I was required to attend for class. It took place in my university’s library which, thinking back, was actually a pretty apt place for this particular lecture. Along with talking about her film, Ms. Paley talked about the ongoing copyrighting war. It gave some insight into just how big this issue has become. Apparently, during the creation of Sita Sings the Blues, there was a ton of copyrighting blocks to get through in order to use some of the music in the movie. I mostly just wanted to say that, when I think about it, copyright laws are more of a hinderance than a help. For instance, if you copyright something, then sell it to a company, you have to sell the rights to your creation as well. So, say you want to take your creation back because you realize you don’t like the company that much. Well, it’s kind of impossible to get it back because you’d have to buy it for more than you sold it for. Basically, your own creation is no longer yours. Sounds like another unfair money-making scheme to me.
